I was born in Trujillo, Peru, where I studied Mass Communications. I started exhibiting my work in 1997 (“a ver pues”, ICPNA Trujillo) and was a finalist for the French Embassy arts competition “Passeport pour an artist” in the year 2000. That same year I was awarded the National Lima Biennial which led me to represent Peru in the III Iberoamerican Lima Biennial in 2002. Highlights in my exhibition history include “Days just follow each other” (Sala de Cultura del Banco Wiese, Trujillo, 1998, “Pact with the uncertain moment” (Centro Cultural de España, Lima, 1999), “About the Art of Being a Woman” (Casa de la Emancipación, Trujillo, 2002), and "There’s Something About Northern Peru" (ICPNA Miraflores, Lima, 2004).
I have worked as an independent cultural entrepreneur since 1998, devising and producing solo and group exhibitions of emerging artists, along with film screenings, musical performances, dj sessions, conferences and seminars on contemporary visual art. I have lectured on contemporary film directors and contemporary artists and from March 2003 to July 2004 I co-founded and co-directed the art gallery “la oficina” in Trujillo. I am currently a curator for the Lima Museum of Contemporary Art.
My photo/video installation work deals with issues of personal and collective identity. I explore my historical background and familial upbringing to query what constitutes my provincial, bilingual, domestic, self. I examine everyday life to focus on latent meanings which tend to be overlooked, only becoming apparent when the realm of the quotidian is stressed. I am drawn to situations of apparent banality because it allows me to create pieces wherein the viewer can meld their personal history into the collective stream of sensitive information, at that point where the story of reality is fabricated from fact and fiction.
